How a Canadian guitarist used youtube's power of influence to skyrocket his career

This morning, CTV news (a major Canadian news channel) profiled a Canadian guitarist whose career has skyrocketed after producing some youtube videos. They feature airport baggage handlers hurling guitars in the air.

Dave Caroll, a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, claims that United Airlines smashed his guitar. After a year of fruitless attempts to rectify the situation, Caroll warned the airline that he would fight back by producing a triology of songs that feature United's name.

To date, four million people have viewed the videos on Youtube.

Don't mistake the message here.

Kudos to Dave and his soaring career. That said, I'm sure all, if not the career professionals who belong to this site will agree that we ought to choose our battles wisely, and to use social media strategically and respectfully to enhance our digital identity.

In my opinion, Dave Caroll emerged with a stronger career in a few ways by using Youtube in a few ways:

1. He used a personal brand of sorts to prove that social media sites like Youtube do garner public attention.Newsmedia in North America and in the UK have published his story.

2. He used the opportunity to promote his own product, his music

.3. He demonstrated the importance of good customer service. When you're looking for work, you want to evaluate a company before you apply and not have a one-sided experience to the sole benefit of the employer.

In the aftermath of the videos, United supposedly has decided to respond and to compensate Dave Caroll. Social media really has a power of influence.

Whether using social media to enhance your digital identity or to malign it is a personal choice.

9 9 09 and the Enneagram personality

On the radio today, there were discussing the meaning of 9. In Chinese cultured, apparently

it means beginning, while in Japanese culture, it refers to ending.

This harkens back to when I learned the enneagram (http://www.enneagram)%20a/a model of personality,

based on 9 numbers, from the "reformer/perfectionist" to number 9, the peacemaker/ mediator

The enneagram is one of many tools of self-discovery has many purposeful aspects for job seekers:

-serve as a tool of prediction (for example, recruiters and hiring managers)

-tool of hiring

-help job seekers decide how to make a career change;

-figure out who is compatible colleague, manager or supervisor in a a company or organization;

-discover how one's personality meshes with a company's culture

-tool of communication to have more harmonious relationships with others

and most critical to starting a job search- a tool of self-awareness, the first step of

embarking on career change.

Some famous numbers in the enneagram:

President Obama is a 1

John Lennon (born on October 9) is a 9

(Co-incidentally, the release of the newly mastered Beatles tunes were released today

at 9:09 am

I had the fortune of teaching the enneagram on a military base a couple of years ago

and my students were fascinated with the 3 hour exploratory course.

And as for me, I am a 2 and a strong 4.

Check out what the 9 numbers mean on http://www.enneagram.com/

What a rising American tennis star can teach us about effective job search

This morning, NBC news profiled American teen tennis star Melanie Oudin on the Today show.

She used one word as her mantra and guiding light to overnight success at the US open.

Believe.

(Coincidentally, Canadian TV promos for the winter Olympics finish with the question," Do you

believe?)

Oudin noted that belief in herself and in her mission paid off.

How is this relevant to a job search?

Belief in oneself is a key to embarking on a job search and winning!

In the past, many of my clients have had the same refrain when stalled in their job

search (until they seek guidance from a credentialed career coach like myself!)

They have a tendency to use the word "hope" instead of using the phrase,

"I believe that I will get an interview....."

"I believe that I will get a call back..."

"I believe that I am a star candidate for ____(desirable employer).

Start changing your vocabulary.

Replace hope with believe.

Repeat that 3 times a day.

See how your job search improves by the power of positive thinking.

Belief in oneself programmes the brain for success.

career change? Forget the resume as the 1st step to job search

Meghan M. Biro wrote a very powerful article about career change entitled "Career change?

"Forget resume...forcus on re-writing YOU, " on careerrealism.com recently.

Some imminently true observations by Meghan:

"Many people begin job searches and career transitions by rewriting their resumes.

Resumes are necessary and a very important step, but they are not always sufficient.

Starting with a resume is really starting in the middle of the process. There’s an alternative

place to begin with a self-assessment.

Meghan aligns the self-assessment with a journey:

"Four factors to take into account when embarking on self-assessment are your:

Personality
Interests
Skills
Values."

Bookmark and Share Right on Meghan!

Two and a half years ago, I stopped looking at resumes during my first

client appointment. How was that received? As a certified educator, you must tell adults why you

are doing something, so I justify using the self-assessment and sell the benefits to clients. 97% of

the time they are receptive because I use 2 secret ingedients that one should use to

convince employers during an interview: persuasion and influence (PI). After doing the

assessment, clients' confidence levels are boosted and turbo charged.Their self-esteem rises

exponentially. The resume is one of the last pieces to start a job search indeed.
