Post-recession-what this means for your job search

I just finished listening to a well defined speech in Gananoque, ON, delivered by Sean Conway, Assistant VP of Queen's University and the former Minister of Education in Toronto. Mr. Conway's speech was effortless and peppered with facts, figures and notable observations.
The message: think globally, act locally. Southeastern Ontario, take note, particularly in a region bruised, battered and wartorn by at least 3,000 job losses in Leeds-Grenville alone. Most of the casualties were in manufacturing.

At tonight's AGM of the 1000 islands workforce development board (workforcedev.ca), Mr. Conway offered insight into opportunities for employment in Greater Kingston:

-baby boomers continue to age
-healthcare, not exclusively institutional, will continue to flourish
-there is a magnanimous shortage of skilled trades. Despite the generous government coffers, young people are still not convinced of the spoils of power and economic gain in obtaining a skilled trade

-elsewhere, opportunities abound in NW Ontario, driven in part by the aboriginal population, whose birth rate is 5 times higher than other communities in Ontario
-Waterloo, home of the Canadian invention, the blackberry. This evening, a hotel in London, ON offered a job fair to draw techological talent to Kitchener-Waterloo (I listened to this story on CBC radio)

To ponder: 51% of the Canadian population lives within Greater Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. 51%!!

To do business with: Mr. Conway observed that the US economy is 14 TRILLION dollars; China is 3 trillion; Canada 1.3 trillion
The big players: China is expected to be 40 TRILLION by 2050!

On the local front: we have attainable access to the US border (Gananoque is a mere 15 minutes)

Think globally. Act locally.

Next segment: promising occupations in Greater Kingston

Harnessing the power of group dynamics-how group coaching can get you hired faster

CTV news just reported that GM is poised to "rebrand itself" and cocoon into a transformed company within 30 days. But what about all the unemployed and laid off people out there?

Periods of weakness build strength and resilience in groups. Have you been experiencing a difficult job search without collective resources to bolster your self-worth? The employment resource centres have their merit, so do career coaches and professionals like myself and so do job finding clubs. But what if you could harness the power of group dynamics? I'm not referring to taking advantage of a job finding club so much as a group to help you get a job faster. Collective wisdom.

Studies have proven that job seekers get hired faster after participating in a group forum.

So here's my offer to you:

How to use the telephone strategically to generate job leads
How to share and learn from collective wisdom of group participants to jump start your confidence all over again so you're you'll be poised to "turbo charge" potential employers
Interviewing techniques that will convince employers to hire you

Harnessing the power of group dynamics-how group coaching can get you hired faster

The survival strategy to save GM from the brink of bankruptcy churned my soul briefly yesterday. The icon of the North American economy had to come to terms with the loss of its once mighty economic empire. Yet, it wasn't a collosal demise of the company-just a financial safety valve when PM Harper and Premier McGinty of Ontario and President Obama announced their financial rescue packages.

On the periphery, laid off and downsized workers continue to lament their fate, owing to the ruthless nature of this recession. But periods of weakness build strength and resilience in groups.

In my area, I am not aware of group coaching sessions designed to help individuals cope with the stressors of the longer job search (many references mention at least 10 weeks minimum in this economy). Yet, studies have proven that job seekers get hired faster after participating in a group forum.
